Ok, I now have everything done, except for the .eng files. I still haven't found anyone willing to do any of these .eng files, and I know nothing about them. I could upload this file right now, it just wouldn't have "authentic" .eng files. The trains do run and everything (they are probably a little TOO powerful actually). This N&W pack will come with all 5 locomotives you see here, along with their coal tenders and water tenders. It also comes with 2 different hand made passenger cars, 1 hand made N&W coal hopper, and N&W repaints of the box car, chemical car, and caboose, all done by yours truly. All in all this file will be 43 MB (!). Yeah, I know it's big. I could probably get it smaller, but I wanted to put it in an install program to make it more user friendly. Oh well, it's a good thing we have high speed internet now I apologize to all dial up users about the size of the file. Anyway, check out the pics!!

They are superb. I can't help you with the .eng files, as steam is not my area of expertise. There are folks out ther who probably can, (if they can stop salivating and get on with it!).Rest assured I will be running these on Austin's East River District (and on the Pokey when it gets done) with lots of vintage coal hoppers. Well done!

Very good and I'm looking forward to downloading them and running them on the new N&W routes coming!
(By the way, I wonder where those other J611 and 1218 steam locos that were being created by others went?)
Good job!

And I would say also, if you can't find someone to tweak the eng files right away, upload just as they are and do a update later when the files are revised.

Well, I appreciate all of the positive feedback on these locomotives. These are my first locomotives I have ever done for this game and it has been time consuming and frustrating learning how to do all this stuff. I'll just be glad to get this stuff uploaded so others can enjoy them.

Well, for a first time release, I'd have to say those are increadible! Not only did you produce such beautiful works of machinery, but you got 5 individual locomotives completed together in an increadibly short time. I think you just set a record!! I don't care what anyone else might say, but I think you're the only locomotive works worthy of the name "The Virtual N&W Roanoak Shops!" (I don't mean any offense to the other locomotive works, who are extrodinary in their own right. ) Also, if you need .eng file help, I'll be happy to offer any help I can. I'm definatly impressed by those locomotives, congradulations on your first release, and also for such wonderfull work!!!!

Looking very nice! Will they have custom sounds as well?
RE: All 5 N&W Locomotives done, here's all the pics!!
Unfortunately, no, there are no custom sounds other than the whistle which I downloaded from the file library here. Working with sounds and things like that is something that I know nothing about (like the .eng files). I just had to change the whistle, though, because all the steam whistles on the game sound so stupid.

A very nice first release Blackhawk2000! Glad you decided to fight through all the difficulties in model creation for MSTS and finish these up.
As for the file size, make sure you run your .s files through Route Riter. If you uncompress and recompress them, you might be able to make them smaller. Also, make sure your .ace files are compressed.
As for SLW's N&W Class A project, it is still coming along. 2 engines are in the painting stage and I am trying to finish up some 50's era freight stock to go along with the pack.
Keep up the good work Blackhawk2000, and look forward to your next project! MSTS definitely can use more North American steam!

.eng and .sms files
Blackhawk, I'll volunteer to try one or two of the non-articulated loco .eng files if you have basic loco specs for them, e.g. cylinder dimensions, boiler pressure, driver diameter, grate area, etc. the more the better. I'll admit that I have no experience whatsoever in working with the dual .eng files preferred/required for the non-compound articulated locos. You can email me through the forums. For sound files, if you cannot find Harold (who is a member here and can be emailed through the forums), try Stuart Williamson, also a member. His generic 2-cylinder and 3-cylinder sound files that are available through UKTrainSim are very good.

Those remind me of the famous black and white photos shot along the N & W in the 1950's. I guess when those engines are released people will try to recreate them.

If you will post some of the files and any data you may have regarding weight and boiler/cylinder specs, I will be happy to work on the .eng files, and would be happy to coordinate with Bill or Georges if that would be helpful. The easy way to get started is to attach a few .eng files as zipped files to a message here in the thread (just like you post a picture file), and I will download and start to modify as I can get to it. I am in the process of relocating, so I may be a little less quick than usual, but that still may be faster than you expect. Hope this helps, Bob

RE: All 5 N&W Locomotives done, here's all the pics!!
Hey, pal, thanks. Someone else on the forum referred me to you, but I have been kind of sick the past day or 2 and havent' really felt like trying to get in touch. Also, I sort of feel like I'm imposing my work on someone else. I will take you up on this, though, because I'd really like to have these engines done right, and my crappy .eng's are preventing this. Should I post the .eng's for all 5 locomotives?? I definitely don't want to overload you. I will look for a reply tomorrow and see what you say. It will be a big help, so it is up to you how many of these locos you feel like doing... THANKS!!

RE: All 5 N&W Locomotives done, here's all the pics!!
Hello, It isn't an imposition, I love to work on these .eng files. I will be out of town the next two days but hope to be able to do some work on them Sunday. If you would put maybe two articulated files together, and then I can work on the other three a few days later, that might be most efficient. It does not take that long to modify the files, the harder part is finding and researching the data behind them, anyone with good specs or websites that reference the properties and performance of these specific models would be appreciated. I may have some limited data on some of them. Ordinarily, I would do my own research from scratch, but as I am in the moving process, I won't have the full ability to acquire all the background I would normally use. Thanks for your reply, and I hope you feel better soon. Bob

You can send me the 5 eng files in one go if you wish...I also need some basic tech data.. power..weight..coal usage..tender weight..etc etc..whatever you have that could give us clue. As I have never pretended to 'be an expert' I would love to co-operate with other eng 'builders'.... all I try to do is make it 'realistic'. I have a technical education and my grandfather was a stewam engine driver (engineer) for the LMS and British Railways...so some genes run in me..!!! !!

Ok, here are all 5 of my .eng files. Before you scream at the mess you see when you open up one of these files, please keep in mind that I did whatever I had to do to get the locomotives operating, so I don't know what I messed up in here. Also, just to clarify some things: this will probably be obvious, but on the articulated locomotives, such as the 1218, the file 1218.eng will be the front part of the locomotive, and 1218B.eng will be the back part of the locomotive. The class Y3 2042 is now the Y3 2009, but I just kept all the files and .eng's with the same name because I'm lazy. Anyway, here goes....

If you haven't got anyone yet, I would be more than happy to build all your engine files. The will have RW attributes as well as correct brake vvalving, evrything. I'm an ex RW hogger and I have piloted and run the SP&S 700. I test all my steam eng files against comparitive diesels to make they pull what they should. Let me know.

Hi Bill, I am working on this, but moving during this process is slowing me down a little. If you look at the UP Big Boy, you will see that these very large articulated steam locomotives are more difficult than the SP&S 700 to get the performance working realistically. The files are outside the envisioned parameters of the simulator designers. If you try the files I have posted for the Big Boy in these forums, I think you will be pretty happy with it, it seems to get as much right as any set of files I have seen so far. I know Bill Hobbs has a great deal of expertise in the steam model, and he may also be working on some of these. I am sure you would also be happy with Bill's work. Bob Blackhawk, Here is the revised 2171B file.

I have downloaded the .eng files and have data for the J class now. Will run the J class through my software this afternoon with both 275psi and 300psi boilers.

I just ran the J class data from the wbsite Andy gave above through my software. First thing that stood out was the fact that N&W apparently used an 80% factor instead of the more customary 85% factor in discounting the tractive effort. I'm not making that change. I'm setting it up for a max coal firing rate of 16,000lbs/hr for a 148lbs/sq ft of grate. Wow, this is a powerful locomotive. I'm going to use 90psi for braking unless someone says differently. Also, the cutoff range will be 15% to 85%.

Bill HobbsMember since Apr-22-03 · 244 posts
RE: All 5 N&W Locomotives done, here's all the pics!!
I couldn't email the .eng files to Blackhawk directly so I'm attaching them to this posting. After looking at the data more carefully, it would appear that the rated tractive effort of 73,000 at 275psi and 80,000 at 300psi were the result of restricting the cutoff of the locomotive to 75% because of the low adhesive weight of the locomotive. So I adjusted the cutoff range to 15% to 75% on both versions, which gives less wasted force and certainly cuts down on wasted steam. Firing rates remain unchanged from the original posting. I was not able to directly test the locos so I used another locos .eng file with the steaming variables substituted and then copied them into the J611's .eng file. I believe everything is in order, but let me know if something is missing.
RE: All 5 N&W Locomotives done, here's all the pics!!
Hey, thanks for all the help, guys. Sorry I havent' replied to your messages until now, I've been recovering from an illness and haven't really felt like doing anything on my computer for the last couple of days. Just wanted to check in. Anyway, I will download these files tonight and check them out tomorrow, and definitely let you know something.

N & W Brake stand types
Another thing to remember about Norfolk & Western Steam Locomotives is;
They BUILT lots of NEW steam in the 1950’s for example, the 611 was built in the 1950’s
They had 26L Air Brakes! Like newer diesels!! I KNOW the “J” Class received the new style brake stands; I also have heard the “A” Class got 26L and the newer Y6b’s got the 26L stands as well."AS they where shopped out.
The N&W operated over mountainous territory and even though the stuck with steam till the 1960s, they where a VERY modern railroad. And they had the most modern fleet of steam locomotives in America.
Remember the N&W was still BUILDING steam when EMD was building F9’s and GP9’s
